Delta now allows you to transfer miles from your SkyMiles account to the account of a friend or family member. If you’ve got extra miles, you could help someone reach enough miles for an award ticket or solve the problem of what to get your favorite traveler for a gift.
The deal
You can transfer SkyMiles for a charge of one cent per mile, plus a $25 fee. You can transfer between 1,000 and 30,000 miles into another account at a time, but all transfers must be made in 1,000-mile increments. You cannot transfer or receive more than 150,000 miles per year.
The minimum transfer will cost $35 for 1,000 miles (1,000 x $0.01 + $25). This is a good price, given that to buy 1,000 miles through Delta, you’d need to pay $55. This offer can save you money if you can top off a travel companion’s account, enabling both of you to book awards instead of paying for one or more tickets. However, if you’re solely looking to get rid of a few miles or make a nice gesture to a friend, you may want to think twice before shelling out upwards of $35.
To transfer
To transfer miles or for more information, go to Delta’s website. You will need to provide your SkyMiles account number, the transfer recipient’s name and SkyMiles number, and a valid credit card. You cannot transfer miles over the phone.
Allow up to four days for miles to post. Transfers and fees are non-reversible, and miles do not count toward elite status.
