Residents have been seeing the signs for months now, but if you’re planning on flying into or visiting the San Francisco Bay Area over Labor Day weekend, you may not know that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be closed for seismic work from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, to 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4th.
This could be a problem if you’re planning on flying into San Francisco and then driving to East Bay cities such as Berkeley or Oakland, but it also cuts off the most direct route to farther out destinations such as Lake Tahoe and Yosemite.
There are enough bridges in the Bay Area that you’ll be able to find an alternate route (to get to the East Bay, try the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge). If your destination is east of San Francisco, you might also consider flying into Oakland International Airport. However, if you fly into Oakland, you won’t have easy driving access to San Francisco.
BART trains will continue regular service and will add hourly overnight service, though not to all stations.
The closure won’t be a problem if you’re going from the San Francisco Airport to San Francisco, anywhere on the Peninsula, or Marin. And, Napa and Sonoma wine countries will still be accessible from San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge.
