Lake Hamilton

I have wanted to see the Grampians (or Gariwerd as it is known by the aboriginals) for some time, but different circumstances kept me from it until now. I didn’t know what to expect, but I had seen some photos and a couple of comments here at Trav Buddy and was looking forward to seeing it for myself. The first thing to do was to find some accommodation.

Inadvertantly, I chose to stay a the Lake Hamilton Tourist Park in Hamilton, which turned out to be further away from the Grampians than I had thought. No matter because it turned out to be a central point for us to do several day trips in the area.

Hamilton, originally called Grange Burn, doesn’t really have all that much to offer. Hamilton Big Wool Bales store There is an art gallery, botanical gardens, an area for bird spotting, the lake itself that has several playgrounds for the kids and takes about half an hour to an hour to walk around, there are “The Big Wool Bales” where you can purchase wool products and learn about wool. The district around here thrives on wool growing. There are several supermarkets, a cinema, an information centre, several churches and a skate park. There is also a leisure centre with a big gym and heated pool. I took the kids there one day and they just loved it, particularly when the weather outside was cold, wet and windy.

The tourist park we stayed in was not too bad and it cost us less than $100 a night in a two bedroom cabin for the five of us. There is a pool, but it was out of action while we were there. It sits on the bank of the Grangeburn River and you can have a nice walk along a track that leads to the lake itself.
