Aer Lingus pilots are planning to strike next week to protest company plans to pay employees at the new Belfast hub less than it pays Dublin-based employees.

The strike will start on August 21 and run for 48 hours. The union that represents the pilots also said further interruptions would be announced. You can find more details in this Reuters article, or check Google News for the most current information.

Aer Lingus stated it was working on contingency plans, but warned that customers are likely to face severe disruptions. The airline is allowing passengers coming from North America Monday through Thursday to change their bookings without paying extra fees. According to the Reuters article, up to 30,000 passengers could be affected.

This has not been a good week for the aviation industry in the British Isles. Just yesterday I wrote about the protests planned at Heathrow on Sunday, August 19 and Monday, August 20 over proposed runway expansions. If you’ll be flying into, out of, or between destinations in Ireland or the U.K. next week, be sure to pack a long book and some extra patience.
